The Mercedes-Benz specialist Mechatronik brought a Mercedes car to the 2012 SEMA Show that may have looked like a vintage 1971 280 SE Coupe, and did start out as one, but is now something special and different.  This vintage Mercedes has been given a lot of upgrades and modifications, including the 5.4-liter V8 engine that powers it.  This powertrain provides over 350 horsepower and has a modified suspension.

In this video, Car and Driver’s Sam Smith takes a look at two vehicles: a Mechatronik 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 M-Coupe and the 2012 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG.  Smith talks about the iconic brand that is Mercedes-Benz, the difference between the two vehicles and the similarities.

The CL63 has been performance-tuned by Mercedes’ performance division AMG.  The engine that powers it is a twin-turbocharged DOHC 5.5-liter V8 providing 536 horsepower and 590 lb ft of torque.

Sam Smith says of the 1971 SE Coupe, “It has a level of fit and finish you don’t really see many places.”  This raises the question, are you a modern Mercedes or a vintage Mercedes kind of person?

The Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy is Mercedes’ teen driving school dedicated to teen driver safety.  The automaker has teamed up with actress Hailee Steinfeld to help kick off National Teen Driver Safety Week which began on October 14th and runs until October 20th.

Mercedes’ Driving Academy and several other entities dedicated to teen driving safety, including Impact Teen Drivers, California Highway Patrol, the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Unified School District Police, will be holding a press conference at a school near L.A which will also include a driving demonstration and specifics about their goal to inform and educate teen drivers of the importance of distraction-free driving.

“In the United States, vehicle crashes are the number one killer of teens.  Most of these deaths are the result of inexperience and distractions,” Carolyn Duchene, director of Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy, told media.  “National Teen Driver Safety Week will bring awareness to this issue and help parents and teens learn the importance of safe driving.”

The 2013 models are rolling out of automotive production plants and onto dealerships during this last stretch of 2012.  Among the most noted and improved of these models are the Mercedes-Benz M-Class SUV and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.  The C300 4Matic has a new engine for the 2013 model year; a 3.5-liter V6 producing 248 horsepower and 251 lb ft of torque.

Not only does this engine have 20 horsepower improvement and a torque increase of 30 lb ft, but the MPG ratings have increased a good amount.  For the outgoing model, the C300 4Matic had an EPA rating of 17 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway, while the 2013 model has an EPA rating of 20 in the city and 28 on the highway.  The best part is, the pricing for the new models rose a negligible amount.

As for the new M-Class models, for 2013 they all receive the Collision Prevention Assist which uses sensors to detect proximity to objects and prepares for emergency braking if it detects an object getting too close too quickly.
